This crack in the case really bummed me out. It's just the ridge for the o-ring which I hear is very common but still. Ouch.

Can of worms
So I started off just wanting to do the whole thing with the kicker bushing. And that was a breeze. Well, I didn't realize it was a breeze until I noticed that my battery wasn't charging and once tested, found out that my stator took a dump. Aaaaand while I was scoping things out in preparation for taking off the primary, I noticed that the front head gasket was leaking. And when I opened the top end up, saw some scored cylinders. And now, well, it's almost all apart. While I have all this going on, I figured I would replace the sprockets and chain too. Oh, and also my fork seals are leaking.

Singin' the Troublehead Blues!! A song I know well buddy. I did a tech post on fixing that locating ring. It's not overly difficult aside from splitting the cases and rebuilding the entire engine!! V Twin sells a steel replacement locating ring for it. Also, James gaskets sells a flat gasket to go in there in place of the O ring. Otherwise it'll never seal.
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks Wes. I may be splitting the cases for a fresh bottom end. I'll probably take it to a reputable shop around here for that. I'll be sure to check out your tech post on that ring. I'm actually kind of excited to be doing all of this.
ReplyDeleteCool, that's the right attitude to start with. Troubleheads have been making good mechanics out of average Joes since 1966!! I don't know how far away you are from southern IN, but I'd be happy to help you out any way I can.
